Eclipse thought-leaders Mike Taylor and Mike Milinkovich will discuss a new approach to building desktop and rich client applications in Java, offer rationale for using Eclipse RCP to create high performance cross-platform clients and describe how a combination of Eclipse RCP and emerging development tools can help organizations bring Java back to the desktop to effectively work for them.
Traditionally most application developers have designed their own architecture and then construct application frameworks themselves. This approach increases development time and adds considerable costs in time, support, and effort to solve a problem that is peripheral to building the application business logic.
Eclipse RCP is causing serious decisions to be made about the desktop computing strategies of enterprise organizations. In fact there may now be fewer obstacles to replacing costly desktop operating systems with low cost alternatives by bridging the discontinuity caused by the Win32 to Vista API shift being proposed by Microsoft.
Eclipse was originally developed as a software tools integration framework. Starting with version 3.0, the Eclipse development team completely separated the base runtime platform, known as the rich-client platform (RCP), from the development tools infrastructure. The result is an extensible, cross-platform application framework that is suitable for building almost any kind of desktop or rich client application in Java.
The first wave of commercial RCP-based applications are starting to appear in a wide variety of industries. Many organizations are standardizing on Eclipse RCP as the architecture for their internal IT applications, thus enabling them to run as manageable, integrated suites rather than as disassociated units of functionality.
Agenda:
"Bill Dudney, Editor in Chief of the Eclipse Developer’s Journal, will host this compelling webcast with Mike Taylor and Mike Milinkovich.
